Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (CofC) continues in mission in Africa, partnering with ministries in Tanzania. Previously in 2008 and 2012, we sent two teams each summer into the Maasai region of northern Tanzania. The results were beyond our imagination!
All members of the 2016 Tanzania team returned safely from their trip with their lives changed and with stories to tell. Read the updates from our two groups here, and keep an eye out for individual notes from each team member.
Here are glimpses of our previous trips! Please join us in celebration of what God has been able to do through our partnership in Tanzania and begin to imagine the next trip.
- We provided the linchpin (or critical element) for the MaaSAE Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS) to get water to the school. After two years of students hauling buckets of water one mile each day on their heads, the cisterns we provided were the key for unlocking the water rights negotiations.
- Over 15 rural churches have been supported with small building grants. The grants between $1,500 and $3,000 are the “tipping point” to help launch local fundraising and community support. In 2008 and 2012, we worshiped at church we used to call “Blue Tarp Lutheran,” because for six years they worshiped with cement brick walls covered in tarps. But now, we’ve worshiped with our brothers and sisters in Christ under a lovely roof at “Malambo Lutheran Church.”
- In 2008, one mother and daughter joined the team for an adventure in Africa. It changed their lives! Now the mom, who was not active in church, is a servant-leader at church, and the college-age daughter’s sense of vocation is compelled by the experience. What’s more interesting, is that this story is true of two families!
- In 2008, one woman on our mission team heard of the 20% death rate during the delivery of babies and significant loss of life to the mothers. She rallied friends and family, and with a bit of help from CofC, there is now a new clinic in a very remote area which serves over 10,000 people. In 2012, we were present for the grand opening and dedication. This is astounding, to go from idea to reality in four years in Tanzania! Now, the lives of babies and mamas are saved!
We have had a significant impact upon the church, schools, and health care in Tanzania. This holistic mission effort has been recognized by many, even safari drivers. David, the owner of a safari company, told us, “You are doing it the best I’ve seen.”
Please join us in supporting the 2016 Tanzania Mission projects. We invite you to partner with us. Because of our long-term relationships, we have nurtured mission partners in Tanzania, whom we know are faithful and trustworthy. And in a country where most live on less than $2 a day, our gifts go a long way! Every contribution is critical to supporting the needs in Tanzania. We hope you will join us in transforming the lives of those in need. To find out more, call Judy at 425-746-7300.
